Port Industrial Road Improvement Project In September 2009, the Port of Grays Harbor posted a request for Proposals for engineering services for the design of roadway improvements along Port Industrial Road. In October 2008, the Port of Grays Harbor selected HDR Engineering to provide engineering and environmental documentation services for the improvements along Port Industrial Road. The services being provided by HDR include design of the proposed improvements, environmental documentation, permitting; and development of the plans, contract specifications, and estimates for construction of the project. The project begins at 29th Street in Hoquiam and continues along Port Industrial Road to East Terminal Way in Aberdeen. Improvements will include widening the existing roadway to include a two-way left-turn lane in the center, an asphalt overlay over the entire width of the road, right-turn pockets, sidewalk on the north side of Port Industrial Road, crosswalks, stormwater facility improvements, and illumination. The intersections of the existing cross streets with Port Industrial Road will be revised to improve driver sight distance and improve access for the large tractor-trailers entering and exiting the Port facilities. HDR has teamed with Berglund, Schmidt and Associates, Inc. (BSA) of Aberdeen to complete the topographic survey along Port Industrial Road for use in the design efforts. BSA is nearing completion of their field work and HDR is coordinating with the Port to finalize the proposed layout of the roadway improvements. In addition, HDR is working with the Port on the development of the environmental documentation as required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The Port is of major economic importance to Grays Harbor County and is the only deep-water port on the coast of Washington, which provides service to major suppliers along SR-8, SR-12, and the I-5 corridor. The Port Industrial Road is a west-east roadway that provides access to approximately 56 businesses in the Port who provide jobs to over 600 Grays Harbor residents. The improvements being developed by HDR will increase the Level of Service and enhance safety and freight mobility of the roadway to encourage marketability and future development. |
